Organisation profile

The Tees Valley Mental Health Leader Award (MHLA) is a £2.5 million investment by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and is led by Teesside University.

The Tees Valley experiences some of the highest levels of mental ill-health, deprivation and health inequalities in England. Despite this need, mental health research activity within the region has historically been relatively limited. The MHLA has been established to address this challenge by creating a strong and sustainable programme of applied mental health research that responds directly to local priorities.

The award brings together Teesside University, Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, the University of Manchester and academic collaborators, local authorities, voluntary and community organisations and people with lived experience.
