Dr Abubakr Ayub has expertise and knowledge in thermodynamics and economic assesment of energy conversion systems including supercritical carbon dioxide thermodynamic cycles for power production, organic Rankine cycles, heat pumps for high temperature heating industry and combined cycles.
In 2023, he completed his PhD at the University of Brescia in Italy. His PhD research focuses on using novel carbon dioxide blends as working fluids in thermodynamic power cycles. To achieve increased power production and cycle efficiency > 50%, he proposed CO2-R134a and CO2-SO2 blends as working fluids in thermodynamic cycles that use industrial waste heat and concentrated solar power (CSP), respectively. He also focused on calculating the thermodynamic parameters, phase behaviour, and vapor-liquid critical points of CO2 blends.
During his service as a Research Fellow at the Net Zero Industry Innovation Centre, he has participated in a number of projects, including the IDRIC project, which primary objective is to propose various renewable heating and cooling solutions to the food industry in the Teesside region with the goal to achieve net zero targets. He works on the EU-funded project DESOLINATION, which focuses on power generation and desalination utilising concentrated solar energy. His main role in this project is to develop transient models and control strategies for the supercritical CO2 blend power cycle in order to produce electricity efficiently under various real-time operational scenarios (starting, shutdown, and part load variations).
He is also working on a short AKT project jointly with GreenSpur Wind company. The project's title is 'Characterisation and thermal performance analysis of a novel Rare Earth-free permanent magnet generator for off-shore wind'. The primary purpose is to investigate the thermal stress in turbine components (stator, ribs, and coils) attributed to the high heat rate generated inside the wind turbine generator.
Overall, Dr. Ayub has a broad background and practical knowledge of heat transfer methods and different energy conversion systems for the power generation, heating, and cooling industries. Dr. Ayub is open to collaboration and strategic partnerships
