Academic Biography
Dr Alex Kyriakopoulos graduated from Teesside university in 2003 with a BSc in Psychology (Hons). He also achieved a MSc in Counselling Psychology in 2005 and a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology in 2009 both at Teesside University.
He is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council since 2009 as a Practitioner Psychologist (Counselling Psychology).
He has worked both in primary and secondary care in the UK, Germany and Greece within a variety of settings ranging from college counselling services to forensic units. During his career so far he has worked therapeutically with a wide range of clinical presentations. Over the past years he has developed a stronger research focus in the relation to the field of cyberpsychology, trauma informed practice and pedagogy in Higher Education.
Currently, he works full-time at Teesside University as a Programme Leader (Director) for the Doctorate in Counselling Psychology and Senior Lecturer in Counselling Psychology. He also supervises Doctoral level research.

Enterprise Interest and Activities
With years of experience and in-depth knowledge, I offer consultancy services covering the entire spectrum of intervention development, policy formulation, quality audits, service evaluations, and external funding applications. I can assist organizations in designing and implementing effective interventions, policies, and procedures to promote mental health and well-being. Additionally, I provide guidance on navigating complex research methodologies and offer support in securing external funding opportunities. As a methodological adviser, I ensure that projects adhere to rigorous research standards and best practices. Example services involve but are not limited to:
- Developing psychological and psychotherapeutic services
- Offering consultancy on clinical governance and quality assurance processes for mental health related services including (planning, designing, undertaking and overseeing service audits and evaluations)
- Supporting organisations with funding applications for mental health/wellbeing related bids.
- Developing tailored psychology and mental health training CPD (Continuing Professional Development) courses for both internal and external partners and businesses.
In summary, I bring a comprehensive skill set and wealth of experience to support organizations in enhancing their mental health training initiatives and service provision. Learning and Teaching Interests and Activities
I am a Senior Fellow with Advance HE and am involved in developing research and theory informed Learning and Tearning frameworks within my Department. Current projects involve:
- Developing a competency framework for research methods across all levels of study.
- Develping a Evidence-based operational framework for Self-Directed Study.
- Developing guidance on Research Supervision Pedagogy.
