Academic Biography

Alison Brown is the Associate Dean (Marketing and Recruitment) in the School of Computing, Media & the Arts.

She first did a sports science degree but realised she wanted to keep sport as a hobby, not a career. Alison then came to Teesside to do an MSc Information Technology and, after graduating, worked for an engineering company developing a hand-held system for safety inspections on offshore oil and gas rigs.

Later she worked in local government as a network manager, installing networks and computer systems, and providing training for staff. She came to work at Teesside in 1999.

As a lecturer Alison specialised in networks and network management, teaching final year and postgraduate students. Focusing on both the technical elements and aligning what the network infrastructure delivers with what business requires.

Alison is very interested in encouraging more women to enter the industry. She runs the award winning Girls and Gadgets event, which bring groups of girls from schools across the north east region to use the University's computing resources.

Outside of work she likes running, walking and swimming in the North Sea, believing you can't beat the Tees Valley area for its opportunities for outdoor activities with the coastline, hills and moors.

Enterprise Interest and Activities

As an ITIL expert Alison has worked on successful consultancy projects during her time with the School including:

  • A short KTP with Northumbrian Water to implement ITIL Change Management on their network infrastructure.
  • A KTP with Coast and Country. This project implemented the ITIL framework within the company and included work to address both the technical and cultural changes required to ensure success.
