Academic Biography
Professor Chrisina Jayne is the Dean of the School of Computing & Digital Technologies. She is also the Dean and Director of Teesside University London Campus since 2023. She received her PhD in Applied Mathematics and an MSc in Mathematics and Informatics from Sofia University, Bulgaria. She also holds an MSc in Computing Science and a Postgraduate Diploma in Management from Birkbeck College, University of London.
Chrisina joined Teesside University in August 2019, from Oxford Brookes University, where she was the Head of the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics. As well as Oxford Brookes University, Chrisina has previously worked in a number of universities in the UK, including as Head of the School of Computing and Digital media at Robert Gordon University and Head of the Department of Computing at Coventry University.
Chrisina is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Chartered IT Professional Fellow of the British Computer Society (BCS). She was awarded a UK National Teaching Fellowship award in 2009 in recognition of excellence in learning and teaching.
Summary of Research Interests
Chrisina's recent research relates to developing and applying novel methods for artificial neural networks, machine learning and artificial intelligence. She authored over 70 peer reviewed papers in international journals and at leading conferences.
External Roles and Professional Activities
Chrisina has been involved in many activities of the International Neural Network Society (INNS) as an elected member of the Board of Governors for the society and currently serves as the President-Elect for the society. She has been the coordinator of the Special Interest Group of Engineering Applications of Neural Networks (EANN) since 2009 and has chaired the Engineering Applications of Neural Network Conferences in 2012, 2014 and 2016, technically sponsored by INNS. Chrisina was the Program Chair of the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks (IJCNN) in 2017 and a General Co-Chair for IJCNN 2019. IJCNN is one of the largest conferences in the world in Artificial Neural Networks. Chrisina served as Technical Co-Chair for the WCCI 2020.
Chrisina is on the editorial board of the Springer journal “Neural Computing and Applications” and associate editor for “IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems.
Enterprise Interest and Activities
Chrisina has interests in projects related to application of artificial intelligence and machine learning methods in engineering, business and education. She has been involved in projects related to handling and working with unstructured documents, including text documents, images and other data modalities; creating a digitization platform for processing, detecting and classifying symbols in engineering drawings; developing an intelligent adaptive feedback for students and mobile learning.
