Academic Biography

Current role: 

Senior midwifery lecturer: Responsible for contributing to the design, delivery, assessment, and quality assurance of the pre-registration BSc(Hons) Midwifery Course.  Extended responsibility includes course leader for the development of maternal nursing care module for delivery to foundation level students in China wanting to pursue a career in maternal nursing care.  I participate were appropriate in university, school and departmental management activities including module and course leadership, participate in fitness to practice investigations within nursing, midwifery and allied health professional students, this role also extends to investigator and panel member.

Research: 

Undertake research and scholarly activity demonstrated through the support of MSc & PHD international students.  Additional duties include facilitating healthcare collaborations with external practice providers and application for ethics proposals and Trust portfolio access. Examples include the studies FLIPE, Barriers to Accessing Maternity Care in the BAME population and my current DrPP, Pedagogical Research for Employability in Maternal Medicine and Enhanced Maternity Care and facilitation of roles in MCoC teams.  I also contribute to the university’s income generation through enterprise consultancy, professional development, and business engagement. I demonstrate achievement through developing external networks with external stakeholders. An example includes the development of post registration MSc and stand-alone modules in maternal medicine and enhanced maternity care with the aim of supporting MCoC and maternal medicine centers.

Previous roles: 

Prior to joining the University as lecturer, I held senior management and leadership roles in the NHS as a critical care lead midwfe, delivery suite co-ordinator, supervisor of midwives (SOM) and contact supervisor of midwives across South Tees NHS Foundation Trust.  I was also obstetric lead midwife for obstetric clinical governance overseeing collation and reporting of data for CNST and CQC during maternity reviews and inspections.  These roles lead me to secure the position of specialist midwfery advisor to the Care Quality Comission.  I participated with large scale MDTs outside of the obstetric directorate having worked as a senior service improvment lead with Corporate Transformation Change Teams with extensive training, development and experience as project manager (PRINCE 2 Foundation and Practitioner)  within obstetric, paediatric,  medicine directorates and corporate directorates. 

I have also held midwifery roles  working alongside the WHO, NGOs, Save the Children and LSTM delivering train the trainer programmes, moderator of train the trainer programmes and provision of quality assurance training in maternity units abroad in particular low to middle income countries across Africa and Asia. 

I also hold an honorary contract with the local maternity unit which allows me to maintain and update my clinical midwifery skills.
