Academic Biography

I am a lecturer in geography in the School of Science, Engineering, and Design. I have a professional background in flood risk analysis and management, having worked as a senior flood risk analyst at a leading multi-disciplinary environmental consultancy for a number of years. After this I moved to Durham University and completed a PhD in geography through the IAPETUS Doctoral Training Partnership. The project explored the interlocking themes of contemporary catchment management, public participation in environmental decision-making, and resilience to natural hazards. As part of this project I worked closely with management agencies and communities in the northeast of England.

Summary of Research Interests

My current research interests focus on the nature of catchments and their communities as connected socio-ecological systems, and how we can develop and promote integrated approaches to management that embed resilience into everyday management activities. I am also interested in ‘environmental place-making’, promoting place-based understandings of natural hazards as integral to the identity of places and communities, as well as how we can exploit emerging technologies in enhancing existing methods of knowledge creation, and facilitating new, democratic approaches to knowledge.

I have expertise in both physical and social science research methods, including the analysis of hydrological systems using numerical modelling and geographical information systems, and the exploration of environment-society interactions through social science and participatory research methods.

Academic Responsibilities

I am currently developing the new BSc programme in geography, alongside my colleague Dr Danny McNally.

External Research Collaborations

I am currently collaborating with colleagues in the Dept of Geography and the Institute of Hazard, Risk, and Resilience on a project exploring methods of assessment of the viability of Inter-Basin Water Transfer Schemes, using the case study of the Indian Interlinking Rivers Project.

I am keen to develop research partnerships with organisations in the Northeast of England around catchment management, flood risk management, community participation, and resilience building.
