Academic Biography

Dr Glen Hopkinson is currently a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at Teesside University. He holds a PhD in Applied Artificial Intelligence from Leeds University and a First Class Honours Degree in Chemistry from Durham University.

After completeing his PhD in 1985, Glen undertook Post-Doctoral work at Leeds then moved to Silicon Valley to work at FMC's Artificial Intelligence Centre for three years. On his return to the UK, Dr Hopkinson was appointed Software Development Manager for ORAC Ltd, a successful chemical database spin-out company from Leeds University.

Before joining Teesside University, Dr Hopkinson undertook consultancy and interim management work, and previously lectured at Liverpool John Moores University in Business Information Systems. Subsequently, Glen spent three years as Managing Director of Connect Yorkshire, a not-for-profit organisation, helping young technology companies in the region develop sustainable business plans and raise equity finance.

From 1992-2003, Dr Hopkinson was a Co-Founder and Managing Director of Synopsys Scientific Systems Ltd, a provider of cheminformatics software, consultancy services and research content. Glen has over 25 years experience of developing commercial software systems using object-oriented, component-based approaches and advanced object-relational database systems to support pharmaceutical drug discovery research.
