Learning and Teaching Interests and Activities

I have 15 years experience with the delivery of a range of pre and post registration nursing curricula.

Teaching interests:

Improving ways of getting students to learn, and how the brain processes information.  I am studying for my Professional Doctorate.

A strong interest in pathophysiology and mechanisms of disease.

External Roles and Professional Activities

I have 10 years expereince as a theatre scrub nurse, involving the specialities of trauma, orthopaedic, spinal, breast, gynaecology, plastics, gastrointestinal, urological, and ocular surgery.  As well as experience of upper and lower GI endoscopy and urology.  This has given me an extensive background in anatomy, physiology and the pathophysiology of disease, as well as the surgical techniques involved in correcting pathologies.

I have 5 years experience as a surgical practitioner, running an autonomous clinic and operating list for specific hand procedures, such as carpal tunnel release, trigger finger release and excision of lumps.  As well as assisting for all aspects of operatuve surgery, including haemostasis and wound closure of simle and complex wounds.  This has giving me the knowledge and skills enabling me to autonomously take clinical histories, undertake medical clinical examination, request investigations, and formulate a management plan, including booking patients for surgery if required.

The above skills enable me to deliver teaching an learning of the apprenticeship standards within the context of the MSc Advanced clinical practice program.  Within which sits the level 7 Advanced physical assessment skills module.

Summary of Research Interests

I have a strong interest in teaching and learning.  Including both the delivery methods of teaching to various group sizes, and the social interactions which occur during the delivery.  As well as the mechanisms of learning.  My professional doctorate has greatly developed my teaching practice, and I am acutely aware of aspects of cognitive psychology when delivering teaching.  Including cognitive load theory, and the perceptions of learners receiving the teaching.
