Academic Biography
Dr Hiba Alsmadi is a lecturer in data visualization in the department of computer science. Her main research area is in the Artificial Intelligence Applications. Hiba received her PhD in 2021 and awarded the Faculty PVS’s for the Best Thesis. Dr Alsmadi is working in multiple projects such as:
Developing a machine learning technique to follow- up Hydrocephalus disease patients. Dr Alsmadi published many journals paper and attended many conferences in her research area.
As a part of her PhD research, she is engaged in a research project collaboration with academic and non-academic staff from Teesside University, Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), and external partners. Most notably, a collaborative project with the Alder Hey Children's Hospital aimed to develop an analytical tool to follow up on Hydrocephalus patients and predict the risk factors using artificial intelligence methodologies. Hiba has reported her findings through publications. In addition, because of the hard work done during her PhD, Hiba thesis has been awarded The Faculty PVC’s Award for the Best PhD Thesis.
In teaching, Hiba make it her goal to instil ideas and knowledge from the students instead of ‘spoon-feeding’ them. she endeavours to ask relevant questions and provide activities geared towards reflective learning. Small group discussions and relevant workshops provide a quite efficient environment for learning and encourage students to participate particularly among the quiet and shy students. Students’ collaboration and team activities make the subject more exciting and help in preserving students’ concerns. An environment that provides opportunities for the students to participate and get involved is essential in the learning process. She believes that encouraging students to assess their progress regularly will contribute to developing their essential and practical skills. Critically assess their work during the various stages of the learning process and question whether they are applying theoretical learning in a more innovative, speculative, and investigative style instead of just applying the formulas.
Hiba teaches different modules such as Research Methods, Java Programming, Java Application development, Object Oriented Programming, Artificial Intelligence, Data Visualisation, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence Foundations. Moreover, in my previous job, she was working as a Lab tutor at LJMU delivering lab tutorials for a variety of modules such as (Introduction to Programming, Computer Systems, Algorithms and Computing). she worked also as a lecturer for 10 years in many academic organisations in UAE and Jordan teaching different subjects following the organizations' policies and teaching standards.
As a part of my professional development, Hiba has done the 3iS and received AFHE Certificate. Completed the PgCert (Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice) at Teesside University to reach a nationally recognised standard of higher education teaching and learning support in addition to exploring a range of methods and approaches to enhance her skills.
