Academic Biography
Dr Humbul Suleman joined Teesside University in March 2020 as a lecturer in chemical engineering. Previously, he was involved in teaching and research for 11 years, working at universities in Pakistan, Malaysia, Denmark and Switzerland. He has completed two post-doctoral trainings from Technical University of Denmark, Denmark (as a PI on an MSCA/Horizon 2020 project) and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia (as a key researcher on a YUTP project. Before that, he had his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (Malaysia) in 2016 and won the prominent publication award for his PhD research. He was awarded twice with gold medals and mentioned on the dean's roll of honours in his MSc and BSc in Chemical Engineering.
Humbul aspires to help the industrial and business sector in achieving their decarbonisation goals by developing cutting-edge research solutions in the field of carbon capture and utilization for downstream processing, waste gas valorization and carbon-neutral fuels. He is currently working to develop a new class of environmental friendly biomaterials that can absorb diluted quantities of carbon dioxide from industrial gases and air at room conditions, analogous to water-absorbing hygroscopic materials.
Earlier, he has worked on industrial and research projects related to experimental and modelling studies of industrial carbon capture by chemical absorption. His research was funded by MSCA/ Horizon 2020, Yayasan UTP, PETRONAS Research, UTP STIRF, Royal Danish Academy and P.A. Fiskers Fund across the timeline (2013 - 2021).
Humbul’s research has emanated in 30+ peer-reviewed publications in well-known journals, like, Journal of CO2 Utilization, Fluid Phase Equilibria, Journal of Molecular Liquids, and Chemical Engineering Research and Design. Moreover, he has presented his research outcomes at more than 15 scientific and business conferences, garnering many professional and academic accolades.
He has been teaching chemical engineering subjects to the students of BEng, MEng and MSc at the University, which includes Process Improvement and Optimisation, Control and Simulation, Mass and Energy Balances, Practical and Professional Skills, Practical Skills for Chemical Engineers and Sustainability in Chemical Engineering.
