Academic Biography

Jim obtained his PhD from the University of Manchester. After University he joined ICI, at Wilton on Teesside, to undertake research using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). He then became involved in mass spectrometry, initially as process control tool and then later to characterise complex mixtures. Together with his co-workers he carried out research to develop new approaches to characterise polymer systems. These included chromatographic, thermal, modelling and instrumental studies. Jim became very active in instrumental development and pioneered industrial uses of novel ionisation approaches and tandem mass spectrometry. After leaving ICI (after 28 years) Jim became a Professor in the School of Life Sciences at the University of Warwick. His research still focused on mass spectrometry but now applied to biological systems. This incorporated studies on ambient ionization, protein structure, blood disorders, proteomics, post-translational modifications and mass spectrometry imaging. He also maintained his long-term interest in synthetic polymer systems.  He was involved (with Waters Corporation) in the development of a commercial ion mobility mass spectrometer, which allowed studies of molecular shape to be undertaken using mass spectrometry. This has been incorporated successfully into a wide range of research activities. Jim left Warwick in 2015 and, after a short break for some major reconstructive surgery on his hips (thankfully successful) is now in good health and, after becoming a Visiting Professor at Teesside in 2016 is now employed as a Professor in the School of Science and Engineering. Jim has given invited talks in a number of countries including Australia, Hungary, Canada, Portugal, Holland, Switzerland, USA, Germany, France, Japan, Italy, Finland, Belgium, Norway, Czech Republic, India, Greece and the UK. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers as well as numerous book chapters and industrial reports. He has an h-index of 38 and his work has been cited over 4500 times.

Summary of Research Interests

Jim’s research interests, based around his expertise in mass spectrometry, include protein structure and function, medical diagnostics (particularly blood disorders such as hemoglobinopathies), proteomics and modelling. He is particularly focused on the use of shape selective mass spectrometry experiments (based on an ion mobility approach) to simplify complex mixtures and to inform drug design and synthesis.

Enterprise Interest and Activities

Jim has worked closely with industrial partners his entire career. This includes his initial work for ICI and partners, his long term collaboration with the leading scientific instrument manufacturer Waters and more recent collaborations with Syngenta on the uses of shape selective measurements in understanding complex industrial mixtures and MedImmune on using ion mobility approaches to optimise the synthesis of biologics such as monoclonal antibodies. He was a charter member of the Waters Centers of Innovation (COI) program. He looks forward to becoming involved in the National Horizons Centre initiative.
