Academic Biography
Jo Irving-Walton is Principal Lecturer (Learning and Teaching) for the School of Social Sciences, Humanities where she works across UK and transnational provision. She is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (PFHEA) and a Recognised Leader in Advising (RLA, UKAT).
Prior to joining TU, Jo worked in a range of educational roles across schools, local authorities, the Department for Education, and the private sector, including international contexts.
Since joining Teesside University in 2013, she has held a number of roles including Principal Lecturer (Education: Quality and Partnerships), Principal Lecturer (International), and Acting Associate Dean (Learning and Teaching).
Her work focuses on how academic judgement develops in practice, particularly in complex learning environments where students and staff are working across multiple systems, contexts and sources of support. This includes the day-to-day realities of maintaining academic standards and teaching quality across partners.
Her recent work also considers the role of generative AI in learning, particularly where it takes on parts of early thinking, drafting and working through uncertainty.
Jo continues to undertake consultancy in educational leadership, management, and the development of learning and teaching.
