Academic Biography

Professor Howell holds the Chair in Governance and is Associate Dean Research and Innovation (ADRI) at Teesside University Business School (TUBS). Through his research and teaching he has generated scholarly expertise in areas relating to methodology, governance, leadership, EU policy and regulation as well as written texts with Nova Science Press, Palgrave McMillan Press, Sage Publications and Science Publishing House Beijing.

Professor Howell has supervised more than thirty doctoral research degrees to completion and produced numerous refereed articles for high level internationally recognised journals (see below) as well as managed consultancy and funded research projects for various public and private sector institutions. In terms of other academic activity he has acted as Chair of the Public Administration Committee (PAC) (2014-17) as well as a member of the Joint University Council (JUC) (2014-17) and the Chartered Association of Business Schools (CABS) Research Committee (2008-14). He is also on the editorial board of a number of academic journals and visiting professor at universities in Geneva and Liverpool. Professor Howell’s text Philosophy of Methodology has been translated into Mandarin Chinese, which was published in April 2019 (Science Publishing House Beijing). In addition he has edited a text regarding ethical corporate governance in Africa with Palgrave McMillan Press (2016) and is currently writing a monograph analysing identity, leadership, culture and path-dependency with Cambridge Scholars Publishers (completion October 2020).
