Academic Biography

Lucy Burns is a Lecturer in Creative Writing in the School of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Law. She joined Teesside University in 2022, having previously taught at the University of Manchester.

Her debut book, Larger than an Orange, an experimental memoir about abortion, was published by Chatto & Windus in 2021. It was named a 2021 Sunday Times Book of the Year and was shortlisted for the 2022 Sunday Times Charlotte Aitken Young Writer of the Year Award.

She holds a PhD in English Literature and American Studies from the University of Manchester. Her thesis explored the history of creative writing at the US liberal arts college, Black Mountain College, and the poetics of the college’s final rector, Charles Olson.

Lucy is working on her second book.

Prior to joining Teesside, Lucy worked as an assistant editor at Manchester University Press.
