Academic Biography

Luis graduated with a BA in psychology from Chapman University in California in 2003.  He completed an MS in applied Clinical and Counselling Psychology in 2005, and a specialization in School Psychology in 2008 at California State University.  He also obtained an MSc in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy from Derby University in 2010, and a PhD in Clinical Psychology from The University of Edinburgh in 2015.

During his career he has had the opportunity to explore various fields of applied psychology including internships in various clinical settings working with patients with mild to severe mental disorders.  An internship at the California State University Center for Developmental Disabilities and at Hesperia Unified School District in Southern California conducting cognitive, neuropsychological, and psycho-educational assessment in order to identify children and adolescents with learning and perceptual disabilities, autistic spectrum and other pervasive disorders, intellectual disabilities, and emotional difficulties.  And also a post-doctoral fellowship in Clinical Neuroscience at the University of Southampton. 

He is a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist accredited by the BABCP and a Charter Psychologist accredited by the BPS in the UK.  He is also a licensed school psychologist and a licensed psychotherapist in the USA.  Since 2014 he has worked for Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS in the department of Health Psychology Long-Term Conditions and continues to treat patients there one day a week.     

Currently he is a full-time lecturer and module leader in the undergraduate psychology programme and in the Counselling Psychology Doctorate.  He teaches various subjects including Mental Health, Clinical and Counselling Psychology at the undergraduate level; and Psychopathology, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Therapeutic Practice at the doctoral level.  He also supervises undergraduate and doctoral student dissertations.   

Research Interests include Personality Disorders, Anxiety and Trauma related Disorders, Bipolar and Unipolar depression and Developmental Psychopathology in general.  I also have interest in the areas of attachment, metacognition, ADHD, Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies and treatment development.
