Academic Biography
Maggie began her working life as a teacher of French and English in a community college in the West Midlands and then taught Drama and English in a Community Home with Education in Leeds. She then went to the School of Social Work at the University of Leicester, qualifying with a CQSW and an MA in Social work.
Her work as a Specialist Social Worker, and later as a Senior Practitioner, in a Local Authority Psychological Service involved her working with children; specialising further and then gaining a Diploma in Play therapy. The work in the psychological service also lead to an interest and specialism in working with children and loss, with a particular focus on death education.
Since coming to Teesside University she has continued her interest in death education, introducing modules within the BA social work programmes and also across other schools in an MSc in Mass Fatalities Management and Victim Identification and also a BSc in Death Investigation.
She has been until recently, the programme leader for MA in Social Work and continues to teach and write about death education. Her Ed. D., which she gained from Durham University, explores the social construction of childhood and death in Children's literature.
Research interests
Maggie has carried out a range of work over the last 20 years in the field of Death Education, with a particular focus on children.
Currently she is working on death in children's picture books.
