Academic Biography
Dr Mardin Abdalqadir is a KTP Associate (Low Carbon Materials Specialist) at Teesside University, working in partnership with Dauson Environmental Group. He leads the development and industrial implementation of low-carbon materials and sustainable technologies, focusing on translating research into scalable solutions for waste valorisation, carbon reduction, and circular economy applications within industry. He is a member of the Energy Institute (MEI).
Prior to this role, he served as a Lecturer and Programme Lead for the BEng (Hons) Energy Engineering programme at Newcastle College University Centre, where he was responsible for programme leadership, curriculum development, and delivering industry-focused teaching in energy and sustainability. He supervised final-year student research projects, with student work presented at national academic events including the British Conference of Undergraduate Research and Poster in Parliament.
Dr Abdalqadir previously worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Teesside University, contributing to projects funded by Innovate UK and UK Research and Innovation in the areas of circular economy, sustainable materials, and low-carbon energy technologies. His work involved material characterisation, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), waste valorisation, hydrothermal carbonisation, sustainable extraction technologies, and renewable fuel development, alongside collaboration with industrial partners on applied research and consultancy activities.
He holds a PhD in Energy Engineering from Teesside University, where his research focused on CO₂ sequestration using clay minerals and industrial by-products. During this period, he helped establish a dedicated CO₂ sequestration laboratory, contributed to intellectual property development and research funding activities, and co-supervised MSc students. He also worked as a Special Lecturer and Research Assistant, supporting multidisciplinary research in carbon capture, mineral carbonation, waste valorisation, and sustainable construction materials.
Earlier in his career, he worked as a Petroleum Production Engineer at Crescent Petroleum, where he gained industry experience in gas processing, plant optimisation, and production efficiency.
Dr Abdalqadir’s expertise spans low-carbon materials, carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), waste valorisation, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), biochar and hydrochar technologies, and sustainable energy systems. His work is driven by a strong commitment to advancing sustainable technologies, supporting the global net-zero transition, and strengthening collaboration between academia and industry.
