Summary of Research Interests
My research uses critical-creative practice and post-qualitative approaches to investigate embodied socio-technical and astro/geopolitical phenomena emerging from nuclear deterrent and space technologies. I deploy these methodologies to understand how, difficult to reach tacit knowledges and more-than-human material interactions, constitute practices of ballistic missile early warning, space surveillance and electronic warfare.
As Vice Chancellor Research Fellow I will develop an archive of oral histories to map how sensorial knowledge from space-surveillance engineering at RAF Fylingdales, has shaped people, places, economic and technopolitical encounters in Northeast England. This research builds on my previous work with RAF Fylingdales as co-investigator on AHRC Turning Fylingdales Inside Out: Making practice visible at the UK’s ballistic missile early warning and space monitoring station (AH/S013067/1) and as AHRC Northern Bridge doctoral researcher.
These projects led to the establishment of the Fylingdales Archive, an online and physical social history archive documenting 60 years of space operations on the North York Moors.
Currently, I represent Teesside University in the Northumbrian Universities Military Education Committee and the Northeast Critical Security Studies Network. Additionally, I am an associate convenor of the Military War and Security Research Group and a member of the British International Studies Association Astropolitics Working Group. I have also contributed to the Parliamentary Science and Technology Committee on space and satellite infrastructure. Additionally I have produced for the BBC, including the acclaimed Arena documentary feature film, A British Guide to the End of the World (2019)that was based on my PhD thesis.
