Mohamad joined Teesside University in 2019 after working on various research projects as a Research Associate at Cranfield University and the University of Sheffield. He is currently a Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering and the Course Director for the MSc in Civil and Structural Engineering programme.
Mohamad’s research focuses on reducing carbon emissions by utilising heat recovery technologies, particularly heat recovery from sewer networks. He has special interest in assessing the viability of heat recovery from large sewer networks by developing deterministic computational models. Recovering heat from sewers can create attractive opportunities from economic and environmental perspectives. However, the consequent reduction in wastewater temperatures may compromise its treatment quality. Therefore, simulating the heat transfer processes in sewer networks enables decision makers to determine the amount, time and location of feasible heat recovery operations that can create attractive eco-environmental benefits while maintaining high quality treatment of the wastewater.
Working previously with industrial partners, Mohamad has implemented some of his modelling techniques on a Belgian sewer network (managed by Aquafin) and advised local authorities (Kirklees Council) on effective techniques to enhance heat recovery applications.
Mohamad is also interested in the water-energy-food nexus. He uses modelling techniques, including agent-based modelling, to quantify the interdependencies within the nexus. His other research interests lie in the area of urban flooding and the development of machine learning techniques to alleviate the urban flood risk.
Mohamad is a Chartered Engineer, member of the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management (MCIWEM) and a Chartered Water and Environmental Manager (C.WEM)
