Academic Biography

Dr Mridula Mohan is a Dental Therapist and academic with a strong background in clinical dentistry, teaching, and research. She is currently a Lecturer in Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy at Teesside University and a GDC-registered Dental Therapist working in UK general dental practice.

Dr Mohan completed her Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, and Post Graduate Diploma in Hospital and Healthcare Management (PGDHHM) in India, where she subsequently worked as an Assistant Professor. In this role, she was actively involved in undergraduate teaching, assessment, student mentoring, and academic supervision, alongside clinical diagnostic work and research activity. Her academic experience fostered a strong interest in dental education and the development of future oral healthcare professionals.

She later completed a Master of Public Health (MPH) in the UK, further strengthening her interest in population health, prevention, and evidence-based practice. She has research experience spanning oral pathology, potentially malignant disorders, and applied oral health, with multiple peer-reviewed publications. Her work reflects an ongoing commitment to research-informed teaching and improving oral health outcomes.

In her current role, Dr Mohan is particularly interested in student-centred and inclusive teaching approaches, clinical skills development, simulation-based learning, and supporting student wellbeing and professional identity. She is passionate about mentoring students, promoting reflective practice, and preparing confident, competent graduates for contemporary dental practice.

Her academic interests include dental education, preventive oral healthcare, applied oral health research, and widening participation in healthcare education. Dr Mohan is committed to ongoing professional development and to contributing positively to teaching excellence, scholarship, and collaborative academic practice at Teesside University.

Academic Responsibilities

Dr Mridula Mohan contributes to undergraduate teaching and clinical education within Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy programmes. Her academic responsibilities include clinical supervision and student monitoring within the student dental facility, ensuring safe practice, professionalism, and adherence to infection control standards.

She is actively involved in pre-clinical teaching in the Phantom Head Laboratory, supporting the development of fundamental clinical skills, ergonomics, and indirect vision.

Dr Mohan is the Module Lead for Evidence-Based Practice for Health Professionals, where she is responsible for module delivery, assessment, and supporting students in developing critical appraisal and research literacy skills. She also contributes to the delivery of the module Fundamental Clinical Skills for Dental Hygienists, supporting students in the transition from pre-clinical to clinical learning.

Academic Achievements

She has received several academic recognitions, including the Young Achiever Speaker Award from the Indian Academy of Clinical and Dental Genetics and the Young Woman Researcher Award from the Venus International Women’s Organisation. Earlier in her academic career, she was awarded the Most Promising Student in Dentistry Award and has received Best Paper and Best Poster awards at national conferences.

Her academic achievements demonstrate a sustained commitment to scholarship, research excellence, and the integration of evidence-based practice into dental education.
