Academic Biography
Dr M. Shahwaiz Afaqui is a Senior Lecturer in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at the School of Computing, Engineering and Digital Technologies at the Teesside University, Middlesbrough, UK. He completed his Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering (Wireless Systems) from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and his PhD degree in Networks Engineering from the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in 2009 and 2017, respectively. Before joining Teesside University, Shahwaiz worked as a Senior Researcher at the Internet Research centre (i2CAT) in Barcelona, Spain. He has experience of two post-doctorates at Maynooth University, Ireland (2016 to 2018) and Universität Oberta de Catalunya, Spain (2018-2021). He is an active researcher with 22+ peer-reviewed journals, international conferences, and standards submissions in radio resource management within wireless networks and Internet of Things enabling technologies.
Summary of Research Interests
His professional academic career is based on the design and analysis of frameworks that optimize the usage of critical resources in wireless networks. More precisely, his expertise (and personal interests) includes topics such as radio resource optimization of WLANs and WPANs (frequency, energy, interference management, among others), cross-layer optimization, network security, and 3GPP LTE-WLAN aggregation. He has recently been working on the design challenges associated with NB-IoT NTN solutions for LEO constellations.
