Academic Biography

Nik Holmes is a practising Illustrator, whose 20-year career in Illustration and Graphic Design has seen him working for a wide variety of clients such as Microsoft, Google, BBC and YouTube.

Prior to his position as Lecturer in Comics and Concept Art at Teesside University, he spent 5 years as a lecturer on an Illustration for Commercial Application Degree, with a particular focus on narrative illustration.

This role allowed him to bring his ongoing first hand industrial experience into practice to allow for delivery which was constantly in line with industry expectations and standards while maintain the highest academic standards.

Working across a diverse range of high profile projects he has drawn for several UK comics, working on household names such as 'Thunderbirds' and 'The Beano', as well as providing concept art and illustrations for the horror reality TV show ‘I Survived a Zombie Apocalypse’ and the 2015 movie ‘Zoolander 2’. Nik is also a firm believer in the entrepreneurial nature of being a creative practitioner in this digital age and is a regular fixture at UK based comic and film conventions where he sells his self-generated comics and artwork.

'Exposed' (2017) Exhibition - Collaboration with Fine Artist Jade Sweeting looking at the role of identity and representation through archiving and found imagery. Culminated in an exhibition of screen prints and paintings.
