Academic Biography
Nicola Selby is a Senior Lecturer in Leadership and FHEA at Teesside University International Business School, where she has teaches across a range of programmes, including postgraduate, undergraduate and apprenticeship provisions. With a background in International Management (MSc) and an ongoing PhD researcher, Nicola integrates global perspectives into her teaching, emphasising the practical application of leadership theories within contemporary settings.
Nicola has former industry experience in managerial roles within the public sector, with expertise in cultivating high-performing teams and equipping leaders with skills for navigating complex and uncertain environments. She has effectively delivered across a range of executive education programs including the Skills for Growth programme in partnership with Deloitte to support leadership development in local and regional organisations.
As a Co-Investigator for the NIHR Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC) South Tees, Nicola contributes to organisational development to support shared infrastructure between Teesside University, Middlesbrough Council and Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.
Nicola is experienced in leading curriculum development across executive education, postgraduate, undergraduate and apprenticeship provisions, and for transnational education partners. She has experience in undergraduate and postgraduate research supervision and has provided academic leadership across a range of modules from Level 4-7.
Nicola also plays an active role in academic citizenship as a panel member on the University's Research Culture Evaluation Group, and within the role of Tender and Bid lead for the school. She is actively involved in fostering industry partnerships and ensuring professional accreditation standards are met.
Enterprise Interest and Activities
Nicola actively engages with external partners to bridge academic research and leadership practice. She regularly collaborates with industry to co-design and deliver practice informed education.
Notable projects include:
- Respect and Speak Up, Principle Investigator: award for delivery of three year CPD program.
- HDRC South Tees, Co-Investigator: organisational development and leadership capacity.
- Skills for Growth: delivery of bespoke applied leadership training in association with Deloitte.
- Help to Grow Alumni Lead: develop and lead on alumni engagement activities.
