Academic Biography

Nicole Beddard is currently studying her PhD in Health Psychology at Teesside University under the supervision of Dr Katherine Swainston, Dr Grant McGeechan, and Dr Jill Taylor. Her PhD is exploring the long-term psychosocial impacts and consequences of being diagnosed with Retinoblastoma. Nicole has also completed a BPS accredited Masters degree in Health Psychology and Clinical Skills, completing stage 1 training towards becoming a chartered Health Psychologist.

She joined the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Law at Teesside University in 2016 as the Senior Psychology Technician. She is responsible for providing training in experimental research techniques including biological data collection and supporting student and staff research.

Summary of Research Interests

Nicole’s research interests are primarily in the area of Health Psychology, in particular psycho- oncology and the psychosocial effects of having cancer as a child (particularly Retinoblastoma) in adults.  Furthermore, what can be created to help these adults in their day to day lives.

Nicole is experienced in qualitative research with an interest in using diary techniques to elicit in-depth data.

She is a graduate member of the British Psychological Society and the British Psychosocial Oncology Society.

Learning and Teaching Interests and Activities

As a technician in psychology, Nicole is very familiar with biological methods of data collection. She teaches students how to use various pieces of equipment for their projects. These include; Eye Tracking facilities, Electrorncephalogram, Transcranial Doppler, Hormone collection, testing and analysis, Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy and Virtual Reality.

She enjoys teaching students in seminars and workshops the use of various software and equipment such as SuperLab, SONA, and Biopac systems.
