Academic Biography
Dr Omar Aboelazayem joined Teesside University as a Senior Lecturer in Chemical Engineering. He holds a PhD in Chemical Process and Energy Engineering from London South Bank University (LSBU). His PhD focused on developing a sustainable process for biodiesel production from low-quality waste cooking oil. He has a BSc (Hons) and an MSc in Chemical and Renewable Energy Engineering from The British University in Egypt.
Dr Aboelazayem started his postdoctoral journey at LSBU at the same PhD research group. He assisted PhD students working on enhancing the oxidation stability of biodiesel and lignin conversion into biooil via pyrolysis. Subsequently, he joined the University of Nottingham (UK) as a Technical Specialist in Sustainable Downstream Processing for 2 years. He worked on an industrial project that was designed to produced bio-based monomer for the production of biodegradable bioplastics. Afterwards, he joined the University of Leeds as a Research Fellow in Advanced Biofuels. He worked on a project that focused on valorisation of lignocellulosic biomass into tailored advanced biofuels blend.
His main research interest is in the development of sustainable processes by minimising carbon and water footprint via waste utilisation, energy integration, and process optimisation. In particular, his research is focused on integrated bioprocess development for waste valorisation into bioenergy, biofuels and value-added chemicals. He works on integrating thermochemical and biochemical processes to maximise the potential utilisation of wastes. He also investigates the generation of biomaterials with bespoke compositions, giving control over the material properties, process conditions and customised applications.
