Academic Biography

Peter Reid is a Senior Lecturer in Product Design in the School of Science, Engineering and Design.

Peter’s career began in Product Design but his practical experience is cross disciplinary in New Product Development. He has a BA (Hons) Industrial Design and MA Marketing.

Peter’s expertise lies in the area where design meets business and he has a keen interest in business strategy. Design, to him, is an inseparable component of marketing and business success. Peter’s expertise is in research driven, commercially orientated design that informs and integrates into the wider business and marketing strategy as well as effective utilisation of design within operational marketing activities. His research interests lie in the process of new product development and service design which calls for an integrated approach to design and business solutions.

Since joining the university Peter has had a variety of teaching roles in design which have focused on product development and design, packaging, advertising and branding. He has been programme leader for a diverse range of BA (Hons) programmes including Design Marketing and Creative Advertising. He also led an innovative funded MSc Design and currently teaches across the BA (Hons) Product Design programme.

Peter's skills lie in developing the students’ ability to design commercially aware solutions against a framework of research. Subsequently, students are able to fully justify the market potential for their work, appreciate the best possible way to get to the market and are more likely to see their designs succeed. Peter works to build on-going relationships with business to bring live, industry-linked projects into the School as well as co-ordinating student placements. This gives students invaluable practical experiences that prepare them for the real world.

Summary of Research Interests

Peter’s interests lie in the roles that design and design thinking can play in increasing business profitability, whether that be in the design and development of new products, brands or services or in developing design capacity within organisations which enables new products and services to be brought to market.

Peter has spoken at regional business events to local companies on this subject and more widely at a number of conferences including, KTP Associates Conference, 2009, Brighton “Establishing New Product Development for Increased Business Competitiveness” Innovation through Knowledge Transfer International Conference, 2010, Coventry “At the fuzzy front end - Introducing four stages of innovation to Solo Cup Europe.”

Enterprise Interest and Activities

Peter has a broad range of experience in supporting Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) and other enterprise activities. The focus of this activity has been in embedding innovation and New Product Development procedures into manufacturing companies, both regionally and nationally.

Recent Knowledge Transfer Projects have included supervising:

  • 2 yr. KTP embedding NPD within Simpson Group, a Point of Purchase manufacturer based in Tyne and Wear. This led to a further 6 month short KTP investigating disruptive product innovation for the same company
  • 6 month short KTP developing new packaging solutions for international battery manufacturer Rayovac
  • 2 yr KTP embedding NPD processes and protocols within international packaging manufacturer Solo Cup Europe
  • 9 month short KTP introducing NPD principles to International automotive functional plastics manufacturer Nifco UK.

Peter also has experience in mentoring for business start-ups and has undertaken consultancy work in developing business strategy.
