Academic Biography
Ruth Boocock is a Registered Dietitian and Associate Professor.
Ruth received her first degree, BSc Human Nutrition with first class honours, from Ulster University and worked in the National Health Service for 25 years before moving full-time to higher education. Her clinical dietetics expertise lies in diabetes having worked across primary, secondary and tertiary care. In 2017 Ruth received her post-graduate degree, MEd (Clinical Education) with distinction, from the University of Leeds and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Ruth was awarded Doctor of Professional Practice in 2024.
She has been an Accreditation Assessor for the British Dietetic Association (BDA) since 2018 and now chairs the BDA Quality Standards Committee where she endorses, accredits or validates education and training in dietetics and nutrition across the United Kingdom. As Chairperson of the BDA Higher Education Group, Ruth provided leadership and represented the interests of dietitians working in the higher education sector. Over the past four years, Ruth has been the BDA Subject Matter Expert for the development and implementation of the first UK-wide dietetic common assessment tool for use in the pre-registration training of dietetic learners in any practice-based learning setting, regardless of the university course they are enrolled on.
Summary of Research Interests
Professional doctorate research identified barriers and enablers to implementation of diabetes remission strategies for adults with type 2 diabetes newly diagnosed within general practice in one of the most deprived local authority districts in England.
Post doctoral interests include
- Weight-related bias, food insecurity, and digital exclusion in people living with type 2 diabetes.
- Practice-based learning (work placements) in healthcare education, entrustment-based decision making, learner confidence, and workforce capability.

Diabetes UK Clinical Champion 2024-2025.
British Dietetic Association 2021-current: Lead for development of a UK-wide Common Assessment tool for Practice-based Learning for the dietetic profession.
Learning Excellence Award 2018: 1st Prize (Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust).
NHS England Innovation Challenge 2015: Finalist.
