Academic Biography
Suleimanu is a photographer, filmmaker, and media consultant whose work sits at the intersection of theory and practice. By combining critical insight with creative storytelling, he produces engaging visual narratives and media projects that are both intellectually rigorous and artistically compelling. With over a decade of experience spanning higher education and the creative industries, his work encompasses research, teaching, learning, and professional practice. He is a Canon and Nikon trained portrait and events photographer with an extensive portfolio spanning a diverse range of creative and professional projects. His recent commissions include photographic coverage of the Black History Month Women’s Event, organised by Unison Newcastle at the Newcastle Civic Centre in October 2025.
In addition to his work in photography as a filmmaker, he has shot and directed over five music videos and recently shot and directed the extended short film 'Japa Ever After' (2025). His creative practice reflects a strong commitment to innovative, socially engaged storytelling, combining visual artistry with a keen awareness of contemporary cultural and social issues.
Furthermore, his research interests include stereotyping in film and television, gender and media studies, and the role of generative AI in the creative industries. Through both scholarly inquiry and creative practice, he is exploring the ways in which media representations shape cultural narratives and social identities.
He currently serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of International Women’s Studies (JIWS), Bridgewater State University, Massachusetts, USA, and the Journal of Creative Media, School of Media and Communication (SMC), Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos, Nigeria.
