Academic Biography

Vishak's research focuses on Digital Twins and Cyber-Physical Energy Systems Optimisation. He holds an MSc in Civil and Structural Engineering with Distinction and a First-Class BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering from Teesside University. He is also a Tutor in Project Management (Engineering) and delivers a number of modules on the MSc International Project Management (online) course.

His research interests include the integration of digital technologies in engineering and energy efficiency: Urban Digital Twin, Building Information Modelling (BIM), Extended Reality (XR), Internet of Things (IoT) Sensors, Cyber-Physical Energy Systems (CPES), and Building Energy Simulation and Optimisation.

Research Projects & External Funding

Vishak previously had a key role in the following research and innovation projects: EU Horizon 2020 XR4ALL funded project SensAR (Near-Real Time Sensory Data in AR), Integration of BIM and AR, the Smart City Sensing project, and the Calibration of Environmental Monitoring Sensors project. He was also part of the SETsquared Innovation to Commercialisation of University Research (ICURe) Discovery Programme funded by UKRI Innovate UK, exploring the commercialisation routes for SensAR.

External Roles and Professional Activities

Vishak is a Professional Member of the Energy Institute (MEI). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (FRSA) and an Associate Fellow of Advance HE (AFHEA), previously the Higher Education Academy. Vishak is also a Member of the International Building Performance and Simulation Association (IBPSA) England and a Microsoft Innovative Educator (MIE) Expert. Furthermore, he was a Task Force 2B Member for SmartBuilt4EU, focusing on optimised building costs. Vishak is regularly invited to review papers for international journals and conferences. He was previously also an external expert at the European Commission Joint Research Centre on the OptiRELS project.

Additionally, having a keen interest in innovation, he is heavily involved in a number of commercial innovations with a Tees Valley Smart Engineering Technology and Energy consultancy company, where he was involved in numerous projects funded by prestigious organisations such as UKRI Innovate UK and the Royal Academy of Engineering. He is also a Local Pathways Fellow of the 2024 UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network cohort. For his innovation in the energy industry, he was awarded Innovator of the Year by Energy UK’s Young Energy Professionals (YEP) Awards in 2023 and nominated for International Energy Young Professional by the Energy Institute in 2024.

External Research Collaborations

He previously collaborated with the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) on OptiRELS (Optimisation-Based Calibration of Residential Electric Load Simulation), an Exploratory Research project.
