Academic Biography
Dr. Zia Ush Shamszaman is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computing & Games at the School of Computing, Engineering & Digital Technologies (SCEDT), Teesside University. Before transitioning to academia, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Dublin City University and University College Cork, Ireland, and as a part-time teacher at the National University of Ireland Galway.
Dr. Shamszaman's research interests encompass Cybersecurity, AI Governance, Secure and Safe AI, and the Internet of Things (IoT). He teaches modules such as AI Ethics and Application, Ethical Hacking, Security Analyst, Cyber Risk and Vulnerability Management, and the Computing Masters Project. He also supervises five PhD students specializing in cybersecurity and AI. His academic vision emphasizes innovation and inclusivity in technology education and advancing research with practical societal impact.
Dr. Shamszaman actively contributes to bridging the gap between academia and industry through initiatives such as developing online learning platforms, promoting cybersecurity awareness, and collaborating with stakeholders to address the ethical and technical challenges of AI adoption. His efforts aim to empower local communities and businesses, particularly underrepresented groups, to pursue careers in technology.

- AI Ethics and Safety: Exploring frameworks for explainability, trustworthy AI, and systemic safety, particularly in high-stakes domains like healthcare.
- IoT: Enhancing the resilience of IoT networks against emerging threats and vulnerabilities.
- Game Theory Applications in AI and Cybersecurity: Investigating exploratory and evolutionary game-theoretical approaches to AI governance and safety.
