A UK-EU partnership to demonstrate integrated carbon capture and utilisation for innovation in sustainable chemicals manufacturing

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

This pump-priming project developed a competitive bid for Horizon Europe Call HORIZON-CL5-2024-D3-02-11 (CCU for the production of fuels), targeting an Innovation Action under Cluster 5: Climate, Energy and Mobility.

The project led to the development of a strong consortium that advanced a groundbreaking integrated carbon capture and utilisation (iCCU) process, enabling simultaneous CO2 capture from biogenic streams or direct air capture and high-efficiency conversion into synthetic natural gas (SNG), eliminating the need for a separate CO2 utilisation stage.

The pump-priming phase was used to strengthen the full Horizon Europe proposal in close collaboration with UK and EU industry and academic partners, with the aim of demonstrating the iCCU-SNG process at TRL 6 at an industrial site in Teesside, directly embedding the Net Zero Industry Innovation Centre within a major European research and demonstration programme.
