Project Details
Description
CalyChar is a super-enriched, engineered biochar that simultaneously enhances food production and captures carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere. It is produced by hydrothermally carbonising low-value agricultural residues, such as crop waste, tree bark, and livestock slurry, and enriching them with natural amino acids and calcium/magnesium silicates to create a sustainable, circular product.
When applied to soil, CalyChar improves carbon content, increases water retention, and can boost crop yields by up to 50%. At the same time, it captures atmospheric carbon dioxide and locks it into the soil as stable carbonates, delivering dual benefits of enhanced soil fertility and climate mitigation.
Compared with traditional biochar, which represents the current state-of-the-art, CalyChar shows 50% quicker results in crop yields. Moreover, it achieves 2–3 times higher direct air capture efficiency and 25% greater lifecycle carbon sequestration. Its adaptability to diverse soil types make it globally suitable for a wide range of agricultural and forestry applications. Early field testing and stakeholder engagement indicate strong interest from farmers and supply chain partners, demonstrating practical viability.
By linking circular waste management with carbon capture and improved crop productivity, CalyChar is a technologically feasible, socially desirable, environmentally sustainable and commercially scalable solution for global food security and climate change mitigation.
