Abstract
Blended learning is characterised by integrating online and face-to-face instruction and can offer avenues for enhancing traditional education. This short paper explores the various definitions, approaches, and benefits of blended learning and blended MOOCs (bMOOCs) and the challenges associated with their implementation. Blended learning design goals include pedagogical richness, knowledge accessibility, social interaction, personal agency, cost-effectiveness, and ease of revision (Almutairi and White, 2018). bMOOCs, which involve integrating MOOC technologies into traditional classes, offer additional benefits such as reinforcing essential skills, providing flexibility, enabling global collaboration, and fostering active learning through flipped classroom models. However, some challenges should be considered, including incongruence between MOOC and semester schedules, variations in MOOC content quality, and the need for institutional support and resources. To effectively implement bMOOCs, it is crucial to address these challenges, continuously evaluate and refine the integration of MOOCs into traditional courses, and ensure that they contribute positively to students’ learning experiences and outcomes.
