BIM-Based Semantic Construction Waste Quantification Framework

Abstract

The chapter introduces a novel approach for developing a BIM-integrated semantic framework that supports construction waste quantification from early design stages. In addition to the knowledge gap identified from the literature review, the perspectives of built environment practitioners are also explored to develop a framework that will hold wide-scale practical applications in the built environment. The qualitative data collection, sampling, and data analysis techniques used to explore the stakeholder perspectives are discussed in this chapter. The chapter also discusses the quantising process adopted to identify the indicators vital to making construction waste-informed decisions in the design phase. The secondary data from the literature, stakeholder perspectives, and information types are integrated to propose the framework. The framework has three main modules: the data collection or extraction module, the data mapping and standardisation module, and the BIM-based CWQ and decision-making module. A detailed description of each module is provided in this chapter.
