Abstract
North-East England is a region in the UK regularly subsumed by larger generic studies of ‘the north’. Its mixture of dialects, surreal humour, signature cuisine, folk music traditions, industrial heritage and distinct friendliness are all too often labelled as simply ‘Geordie’. James Leggott adds some well needed cultural authenticity to perceptions of the region. He critically analyses a rich tapestry of commercially successful film and TV texts, spanning from the River Tees to the outer reaches of Northumbria via Wearside and County Durham.
