Abstract
Magnetic North is a project that is concerned with the mapping and topology of certain points, people and memories throughout the North East landscape (It felt wholly appropriate to use the title Magnetic North as it is known geographically to be to be constantly in a state of flux with True North depending on where in the world you measure it) Opposites and divisions such as positive and negative, north and south encompass (sic) it’s the work and it’s themes of the project such as absence, occupancy and reaction.
The work is designed to question how we move through and react to a specific place. As well as exploring and documenting fundamental changes I also want to investigate the process of the construction of memory allowing the viewer to question their own memories. Using mixed media and found ephemera from relevant spaces the work explores the expressive power of “recycling“ in its various guises, both physical and metaphorical to build complex narratives. This also includes the ways in which identity is connected with such things.
The exhibition includes large scale collage, an installation, a set of limited edition books and an experimental film.
