Abstract

Construction projects are usually unique in scope, location, and clients. This uniqueness is compounded by the complexities and level of uncertainties associated with each project. All these put pressure on the decision-makers, requiring them to take critical decisions at short notice. The effectiveness of such decisions, especially in a highly collaborative way of working like BIM implementation, depends on the competencies of the decision-maker. Accordingly, this paper seeks to evaluate the relevant skills and knowledge decision-makers require in BIM implementation to help improve the decision-making process in construction projects now and the future. The study started by developing an inventory of skills and knowledge (SKI) relevant to decision-makers in BIM implementation of construction projects through a comprehensive review of extant. The extracted SKI list was converted to a questionnaire, and responses were subjected to quantitative analysis. Analysis of the result revealed a slight difference between the skills and knowledge considered relevant to decision-makers now and in the future. Teamwork and collaborative skills and knowledge about BIM implementation were ranked first now, while strategic planning ranked first among the SKI considered relevant to decision-makers in BIM implementation of construction projects. Understanding these skills and knowledge can help decision-makers in BIM implementation improve their decision-making acumen and help construction firms determine what skills and knowledge they need to prioritise to meet the future needs in a complex project-based industry like construction.
