Abstract
Every year we welcome thousands of students to creative programmes across the UK and more often than not, they arrive having studied subjects that do not directly relate to their higher education choices. This raises the question how do we encourage Art and Design students to think differently and take risks in a way that they have not been required to do before?
‘(Disruptive) Transitions’ as an official event of ‘The Big Draw’ 2019 aimed to start and address some of these issues and turn them into positives through a series of drawing workshops that took place with collaborative groups of Fine Art, Interior Design, Fashion and Graphic Design students and staff at Northumbria University. Intentionally, they all took place under the gaze of the hundreds of people that pass through the Design School foyer each day. The programme of workshops had 2 main aims;
1. To support student transition through innovative learning and teaching;
2. To generate collaborative, cross-disciplinary, creative engagement through drawing focussed curriculum activities and external partnership.
Upon completion of the workshops and having exhibited the several 5m x 2m works to the public, students completed questionnaires and discussed their thoughts on the project and the responses were fascinating, both expected and unexpected and very much dependent on the point in time within the reflection period.
The presentation extracts, presents and discusses findings from the primary research outcomes of the collaborative drawing programme. Ultimately, we start to identify the value of drawing as a conversation with others or indeed ourselves, a point in time that represents an idea that is then improved upon (or not) by another and enables a growing sense of information and communication to take place on a daily basis – The work is forever evolving and interpretations of the work forever changing from a practitioner and audience perspective.
The resultant research will be used to inform and enhance creative education moving forward and this will also be discussed.
