Emotional intelligence and practical strategies to enhance human skills in a digital world

This chapter explores the integration of the emotional and cognitive dimensions of learning as a foundation for preparing students to flourish in rapidly changing, AI-shaped futures. Building on Newton’s (2014) concept of thinking with feeling it shows how integrating the head and heart can foster durable skills such as empathy, reflective judgement, and adaptability - qualities essential for global competence. Linking theory, policy, and practice, the chapter introduces models that illustrate how emotion, cognition, and social connection intertwine to create meaningful learning and how leadership and institutional culture shape emotional climates. Practical strategies include building trust, harnessing curiosity and acknowledging frustration to drive deeper thinking alongside approaches that embed reflection, collaboration and design learning for adaptability. Case vignettes from schools, higher education, and vocational settings demonstrate how emotionally attuned pedagogy can nurture knowledgeable and durable learners who are equipped to act wisely and humanly in changeable futures.
