Abstract
The metaverse is an emergent idea to bring together disparate virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality platforms into a seamless shared space. This paper defines the metaverse, the challenges of bringing it to market, and the ethical issues that arise from its implementation. These issues concern privacy, neural rights, covert virtual objects, bodily autonomy, data governance frameworks and pro- and antisocial behaviour change. The paper concludes with future research and policy opportunities as the platform emerges.
