Evaluating the Impact of the International Online Student Healthcare Conference: A Mixed-Methods Study

Research output: Contribution to conferencePosterpeer-review

Abstract

Introduction & Aim
To meet increasing regulatory requirements for interprofessional education (IPE), the annual International Online Student Healthcare Conference (IOSHC) was developed in September 2023. It brought together students from diverse disciplines to present research, promote IPE, foster research activity, and enhance global connectivity. This study evaluated the conference's effectiveness by exploring students' perceptions and experiences.
Methods
Twelve institutions participated across two conferences, nominating students based on research quality. Participants presented their research and were invited via email to complete an online survey with Likert scale responses and semi-structured interview. A mixed-methods design evaluated their experiences, with data analysed descriptive statistics and reflexive thematic analysis.
Results
Thirty-two students participated, representing chiropractic (41%), dietetics (9%), nursing (13%), occupational health (6%), physiotherapy (9%), public health (16%), and sports therapy (6%). Fourteen completed the survey (44%) and 5 (16%) participated in interviews. Survey responses indicated neutral feelings about the presentation duration (mean: 3.43 ± 1.34), but agreement on enjoyed presenting online to international peers (4.07±1.27), feeling motivated to pursue research (3.86±0.77), interest in future conferences (4.00±0.88), and intentions to engage in future research activities (4.00±0.96). Interviews revealed three main themes: increased confidence and competence in presenting research, validation through institutional representation, and a greater understanding of other disciplines. Despite technical challenges and limited interaction, the multidisciplinary format enriched learning and fostered collaboration.
Conclusion
The IOSHC successfully promoted IPE and global collaboration while enhancing students’ personal and professional development. Such initiatives are critical for preparing chiropractic students for future integration and effective multidisciplinary practice.
