Abstract

Collaborative moving-image research project developed with internationally recognised artist Ursula Mayer and Olya Sova during Mayer’s residency at the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Los Angeles. Co-scripted, co-produced and performed by Prof Sarah Perks, with original moving-image footage filmed by Perks using handheld and mobile methods, the work extends her research into curatorial and collaborative methodologies, experimental storytelling and affective approaches to place.

Developed through a road journey across California during a period marked by winter fires, political transition and the death of David Lynch, Ghosts of Love explores how movement through landscape, dialogue and shared acts of filming can function as modes of enquiry and collective meaning-making. Interweaving intimate encounters, news cycles and landscape imagery, the film investigates collaborative healing, environmental uncertainty and the relationship between moving-image practice and contemporary social experience.

The project contributes to Perks’ wider research into expanded curatorial practice and interdisciplinary forms of knowledge production through moving image.
