Abstract
HOME was a large-scale, co-created, promenade performance and project. Taking place in Albert Park, this site-specific work used interdisciplinary art forms to explore ideas, stories and notions of home. The production featured a professional ensemble of dancers alongside a community cast of residents from Middlesbrough. The community cast of dancers alongside voice recordings in the soundscape, communities told their stories of home, exploring memories and traditions from their homeland and expressing what makes Middlesbrough a place of pride and hope.
Across the project, people from all 20 wards of Middlesbrough were engaged through consultations and workshops in dance, craft, and creative writing.
In total, the project engaged with 3,432 people of which 1,714 were adults and 1,720 were children and young people. The performance featured over 100 individual community performers.
The live audience for the project reached 14,250 with a further 28,263 people interacting with the project online.
I was the Artistic Director of the project, developing new methods of practice for large scale community engaged art. This was informed by my 'Developing Your Creative Practice' grant from Arts Council England where I investigated new methods for working at scale.
