Abstract

Recently a question asked by a non-nursing colleague gave us cause to reflect. “What do ICU nurses do?” It was so easy to talk about all the highly technical aspects of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nursing care, managing ventilation, renal replacement therapy, analysing blood gases, sedation, titrating inotropes, and untangling lines! Those skills, however, can arguably be performed by many professionals with the correct training and experience. So, what makes an ICU nurse special? What is our unique selling point (USP)?
