Abstract

Different leaf extracts (alcohol, chloroform and aqueous) of Syzygium cumini were tested against a number of pathogenic bacteria. Alcoholic and aqueous extract showed a good antibacterial activity against most of the strains. Antibacterial activity of alcoholic extracts of Syzygium cumini, when compared to alcoholic extracts of Lawsonia alba showed more potent activity against Shigella flexneri, Samonella paratyphi B, Escherichia coli, Vibrio cholerae and Staphylococcus aureus.
