Abstract
The built environment consumes half of the raw materials and generates one-third of global solid waste. The consequences of uncontrolled waste generation result in excessive raw material extraction, carbon emissions, energy usage, pollution, and landfilling, affecting the triple bottom line of sustainability. This chapter provides an overview of construction waste generation in the built environment, measures and methods adopted to manage and assess construction waste, and the applications of Building Information Modelling and Semantic Web Technology in enhancing construction waste quantification workflows. The existing knowledge gap and justification for the research, the research aim and objectives, and the scope covered in the research are also highlighted. Finally, the chapter concludes by discussing the stages of the design science research approach adopted to meet the objectives.
