Abstract
In 1969 Jack Kirby, Marvel Comics' visual co-creator, was hired to design costumes for William Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar by the University Theatre Company at Santa Cruz at the newly-built Cowell College of the University of California at Santa Cruz. It would be the first time that Kirby's cosmic designs would be translated to three-dimensional costumes. Just as he fell out with Marvel Comics, the play would inspire Kirby to create a new Shakespeare-inspired universe for their rival DC Comics.
