Abstract
The structure of the ordered ethyne overlayer on Cu(1 1 1) has been studied by low energy electron diffraction (LEED). Saturation coverage of chemisorbed di-σ/di-π ethyne yields a (2, 1; 0, 4) diffraction pattern of essentially rectangular symmetry. Interpretation of this pattern in light of data on the chemical bonding of ethyne on Cu(111) allows categorical assignment of the overlayer to a (2, 1; 2, 5) structure of the p1 space group.
