Abstract
Diabetes is a growing global health problem. The majority of the 536.6 million living with diabetes live in low- and middle-income countries. Biomedical management of diabetes is often framed as an individual responsibility to self-manage it through compliance with diet, physical activity and taking medicine as prescribed. However, biomedical providers often highlight the problem of ‘non-compliance’ among patients – failure to adhere to biomedical advice on self-management of diabetes.
